Who’s the best?

It’s that time of year when music magazines and websites compile their annual ‘best’ guitarist of the year, leading to arguments from fans as to why their own particular favourite player didn’t make the top spot (or even the list).

Ian Gillian (R) Steve Morse (C) and IanI’ve had a quick look at the list for best rock guitarist from Music Radar (http://www.musicradar.com/news/the-16-best-rock-guitarists-in-the-world-right-now) and there aren’t many surprises in there. It was good to see Steve Morse getting in on the act as he’s been very underrated in his time with Deep Purple. Filling in for Ritchie Blackmore was no mean feat and Steve Morse has done a stellar job over the years, providing a new energy and dynamic for the band. In their recent concert in Glasgow he (and the rest of the band) were simply outstanding. It was one of the best performances I’ve heard from Deep Purple in years.

An interesting list for any aspiring guitarist is the best guitar personalities list (http://www.musicradar.com/news/the-10-best-guitar-personalities-in-the-world-right-now) which features many of the best-known guitar orientated you tube hosts including, Rob Scallion, Rob Chapman and the dudes from the Pedal Show. However, there should be a word of warning when watching these channels, not only do they display excellent guitar skills (and some great lessons from the likes of Justin Guitar) but you will easily find yourself trying to figure how many bills you can avoid in order to buy the latest gear which they demonstrate!

These lists are very subjective and depend on who has released material in the past year. However, it was great to see Alan Nimmo of King King making it into the best blues guitarist list (http://www.musicradar.com/news/the-17-best-blues-guitarists-in-the-world-right-now) . King King have been on a roll recently and their new album is superb, definitely worth a listen.

No doubt everyone will have their own favourite guitarist from the past year, sometimes it’s the same person every year but at least these lists help to promote all guitarists and keep the debate going about who was the best this year.
